Bullying in the Workplace
Bullying in the workplace. Yes, it does exist.
Have you experienced being talked down to by co-workers or management, to the point it made you cry? Have you experienced favoritism over others, be it managers or co-workers? Have you experienced gossip among other co-workers, hearing “this and that” about another employee? Have you experienced being told you are a “retard” by another employee, because you are slow at learning? Have you experienced drama in the workplace, to the point where you are sick of hearing it all and no longer want to be a part of it? Have you ever been told “should have never hired you in the first place?” Have you ever heard a manager yell at another employee so loud enough you could hear it behind closed doors, and then hear the employee cry? I could go on and on with a whole slew of these type of questions. I have experienced them all. To my face, and behind my back. And to my fellow co-workers.
If you have answered “Yes” to any of these questions, this is called and known as Bullying in the Workplace. In comparison to being bullied by kids against other kids, bullying in the workplace should not be tolerated as there are state laws and policies that protect employees from “harassing” other employees, which includes managers, so it is not as worse as being bullied by kids. However, it seems that harassment vs bullying is the debatable issue in most states when it comes to bullying in the workplace. The only thing that protects kids from being bullied by other kids are state laws, if you happen to be in one of those 49 states that has those laws. There are no federal laws that protects kids from being bullied by other kids, as of yet. There was supposed to be a federal law passed some time ago, for this act, but it was “passed upon” by Congress (or was it the House of Representatives? I don’t remember which one it was, but I do remember reading about this as I posted it on Your Life Matters Facebook page several years ago). However, there was a state law passed in California in January of 2015 regarding bullies in the workplace, which can lead to the other 49 states following suit in the future to come. How long will this take for the other 49 states to follow California? Not quite sure, but Utah is the 2nd state to follow California, and that was in March of 2015.
Each state of the United States has to have policies on their workplace doors which states that they do not condone or tolerate “any type of harassment” in their environment so as to protect themselves as well as their employees, but it STILL happens. Depending where you work and how strict management are about these policies will get the employee bully kicked out of their doors, OR NOT. It depends whether you voice what you witness or have experienced yourself, and it also depends on whether or not there are other witnesses to the bullying who are willing to step forward and say something about it. It boils down to speaking up and standing your ground, knowing the difference between right and wrong and what you will and will not tolerate, even if it’s not you and someone else who you are working with that is the victim.
If you have not read the policies in your workplace, or if they have never been discussed through your training, then you NEED to read them and be aware that, in my opinion I consider more severe than harassment, bullying in the workplace is not allowed.
